Brain and CNS

?
The human nervous system contains two internal systems, what are they?
The central nervous system.
The peripheral nervous system.
1 of 25
What is the central nervous system?
It consists of the brain and the spinal cord, helps generate behaviour.
2 of 25
What is the peripheral nervous system?
It connects all organs to the central nervous systems, and consists of cranial, spinal and autonomic nerves.
3 of 25
How many pairs of cranial nerves are there?
There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves, one part of each pair controls each side.
4 of 25
How many sensory cranial nerves are there?
There are 3 sensory cranial nerves: olfactory, optic nerve and vestibulocochlear.
5 of 25
How many motor cranial nerves are there?
There are 5 motor cranial nerves: oculomotor, trochlear, abducens, hypoglossal and accessory nerve.
6 of 25
How many sensory motor nerves are there?
There are 4 sensory motor nerves: frigeminal nerve, facial nerve, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerve.
7 of 25
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
There are 31 pairs of nerves that emerge along the spinal cord, one of each pair controls each side.
8 of 25
How many sections are the spinal nerves split into?
They are split into 5 sections depending where they are situated: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal.
9 of 25
What does the cervical section consist of?
C1-3: neck muscles.
C4: diaphragm
C5: deltoid
C6: wrist
C7: triceps
C8: fingers
(Not doing dishes? Wtf)
10 of 25
What does the thoracic section consist of?
T1: hand
T2-12: intercostals
T7-L1: abdominals
T11-L2: ***********
(Hello I am Ellen)
11 of 25
What does the lumbar section consist of?
L2: hips
L3: quadriceps
L4-L5: hamstrings
L4-S1: foot
(Head quarters have funds)
12 of 25
What does the sacral section consist of?
S2: penile erection
S2-S3: bowel and bladder
13 of 25
What is the autonomic system?
It regulates internal function and is split into 2 divisions: sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.
14 of 25
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
It prepares the organism for action.
15 of 25
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Responsible for the body's ability to relax.
16 of 25
The brain develops from 3 separate swellings at the top of the neural tube. What are they?
The forebrain (diencephalon), the midbrain and the hindbrain.
17 of 25
What does the hindbrain develop into?
It develops into the cerebellum (motor function), the medulla (cardiac centre) and the pons (cranial nerve).
18 of 25
What does the midbrain develop into?
It develops into the tectum (visuo and auditory responses), the cerebral aqueduct (flow of cerebro-spinal fluid) and then tegmentrum (motor centre)
19 of 25
What does the diencephalon develop into?
It develops into the thalamus (sensory and motor function) and the hypothalamus (regulates body temp, sleep and hunger).
20 of 25
What are the cerebral hemispheres?
They lie over the thalamus and midbrain, there is a right and left side which control opposite sides of the body.
21 of 25
What are the four lobes that the surface of the cerebral hemispheres are divided into?
The frontal lobe (cog functions), the parietal lobe (sensory info), the temporal lobe (hearing and smell) and the occipital lobe (visual info).
22 of 25
What are the left and right hemisphere connected by?
The corpus collosum.
23 of 25
What is the central sulcus?
It separates the sensory cortex of the parietal lobe and the motor cortex of the frontal lobe
24 of 25
What is the lateral sulcus?
It marks the edges of the temporal lobe.
