Waves

?
What is the place where two standing waves cancel each toher out?
Node
1 of 19
What is the name of the place where two waves add together, or interdere constructively and make a double size wave?
Anti-node
2 of 19
What is the distance between two nodes or two anti-nodes?
Hald a wavelength
3 of 19
What is the distance from a node to an anti-node?
Quarter of a wavelength
4 of 19
What is the equation to find out the speed of a wave?
V=Lamda x f; this is because Speed=distance/time, but as frequancy = 1/Time Period V=Lamda/T becomes V= Lamda x f
5 of 19
What is a mechanical wave?
Waves that move through a medium, for example a water wave.
6 of 19
What is a progressive wave?
A wave that distributes energy from a point source to a surrounding area. They move energy in the form of vibrating particles or fields.
7 of 19
What is Peak - Peak, or Trough-Trough called?
Wavelength
8 of 19
What is the centre to peak/trough called?
Amplitude
9 of 19
What is the fundamental frequancy?
The longest wavelength that the string has; Wave lenght will = 2 x L
10 of 19
What happens if we increase the frequancy and decrease the wavelenght?
It will create a node in the middle, this is called the first overtone, otr the second harmonice. The wavelength = L
11 of 19
What is the wavelength and frequancy of the second overtone and third harmonic?
Lamda=2/3L and F=3 x Ff
12 of 19
How can we caluclate the speed of a wave?
V=Root(F/M), where V=Speed (m/s), F=Tension (N), and M=Mass per metre of the string (Kg/m)
13 of 19
What is the displacement?
The distance a particle moves from it central equilibrium position
14 of 19
What is the Amplitude?
The maximum displacement from the central equilibrium position
15 of 19
What is the phase angle?
The position along the wave, which is normally measured in degrees or radians. One complete wave is 360 degrees, so from a peak to a trough will be a change in phase of 180 degrees
16 of 19
What is V=FxLamda? And what is each part?
Speed of a wave; V=Speed (m/s), F=Frequancy (Hz), Lamda=Wavelength (m)
17 of 19
What is v=Root(F/M)? And what is each part?
The speed of a wave on a string. V=Speed (m/s), F=Tension (N), M=Mass per metre of the string (kg/m)
18 of 19
What is: Lamda, a, x, D, d, n, and Theta?
Wavelength, m; slit spacing in Young's experiment, m; fringe seperation in Young's experiment, m; the slite seperation in diffraction grating, m; order number of the fringe (always an integer); angle from the centre of the difraction grating to the f
