Supine
1) Place fingers just distal & lateral to ASIS and resistance hand on anterolateral thigh
2) Patient medially rotates & flexes the hip (also abduct)
3) Can palpate distally to feel ITB
Tensor fascia latae
1 of 21
Sitting
1) Sit on edge of table with left leg resting on a stool
2) Place right leg crossed on the leg (hip flexion & lateral rotation)
3) Push right leg down while client pushes up
Sartorius
2 of 21
Prone
1) Patient laterally rotates and extends the hip
Gluteus maximus
3 of 21
Side
1) Place finger distal to iliac crest & greater trochanter
2) Place resistance hand on distal thigh
3) Patient abducts thigh
Gluteus medius
4 of 21
Supine
1) Place one foot on a stool with the other remaining on the bed (stabilisation)
2) Patient adducts leg against resistance
3) Feel for proximal tendon (most prominent)
Adductor longus
5 of 21
Supine
1) Thigh on table but leg hanging off table
2) Place finger on tendon of adductor longus then drop off medially to be on gracilis
3) Patient flexes leg at knee
4) Tendon is most medially on medial side of knee (but hard to palpate)
Gracilis
6 of 21
Supine
1) Thigh on table but leg hanging off table
2) Patient extends leg against resistance
Rectus femoris
7 of 21
Supine
1) (see rectus femoris)
2) Palpate in anteromedial thigh just proximal to patella
Vastus medialis
8 of 21
Supine
1) (see rectus femoris)
2) Palpate in anterolateral thigh just proximal to patella
Vastus lateralis
9 of 21
Prone
1) Patient has leg partially flexed at knee
2) Flex the leg against resistance
Biceps femoris
10 of 21
Prone
1) (see biceps femoris)
2) Palpate between the 2 large bands that comprise the hamstring tendons
- Palpate medially to this space to feel semitendinosus tendon (and proximal to semimembranosus tendon)
• Biggest tendon on medial side of knee
Semitendinosus
11 of 21
Prone
1) Start with knee extended
2) Patient plantarflexes the foot
3) Can flex the knee to see the tendon origin in between the hamstrings tendons
Gastrocnemius
12 of 21
Prone
1) To differentiate between soleus & gastrocnemius, flex the knee 90*
2) Place palpating hand on sole of foot and apply resistance when the client plantarflexes
- Gastrocnemius should not be prominent since the dorsiflexion position relaxes it
3) F
Soleus
13 of 21
Prone
1) Patient plantarflexes & inverts the foot
2) Find tendon which is posterior & distal to the medial malleolus
3) Repeat with patient contracting & relaxing
4) May need to apply pressure as it’s fairly deep
Tibialis posterior
14 of 21
Supine
1) Place resistance hand on medial side of foot
2) Resist dorsiflexion & inversion
3) Palpate the distal tendon from the medial side of the ankle and follow up to find muscle belly
Tibialis anterior
15 of 21
Supine
1) Resist patient extending toes 2-5
2) Palpate each tendon on each toe
Extensor digitorum longus
16 of 21
Supine
1) Resist patient extending big toe
Extensor hallucis longus
17 of 21
Side
1) Place fingers on the lateral side of fibula and on lateral side of foot
2) Resist eversion
3) You can see the tendon just proximal to lateral malleolus
Peroneus longus
18 of 21
Side
1) Place fingers on the lateral side of fibula and on lateral side of foot
2) Resist eversion
3) You can see the tendon just proximal to lateral malleolus and more distal to peroneus longus
Peroneus brevis
19 of 21
Prone
1) Patient flexes toes
2) Contract & relax to be able to palpate tendons slightly under & behind the medial malleolus
Flexor digitorum longus
20 of 21
Prone
1) Patient flexes toes
2) Contract & relax to be able to palpate tendons slightly under & behind the medial malleolus
Flexor hallucis longus
21 of 21
