Deltoid
4 of 31
Supine
1) Sternal head – Resist bringing arm across to opposite hip
2) Clavicular head – Resist bringing arm across body over head (mixture of flexion & adduction)
Pectoralis major
5 of 31
Prone
1) Place palpating fingers superior to spine of scapula
2) Patient abducts arm against resistance
3) Feel is tendon (very important tendon) deep to deltoid
- Locate acromion process then drop off distally & laterally
Supraspinatus
6 of 31
Prone
1) Lie in spincter position? (elbows close with arms out in a V)
OR
1) One forearm hanging over the edge of the bed
2) Patient rotates arm laterally against resistance
3) Palpate just below spine of scapula
- Wider on scapula then narrows towards i
Infraspinatus
7 of 31
Prone
1) Lie in spincter position? (elbows close with arms out in a V)
OR
1) One forearm hanging over the edge of the bed
2) Patient laterally rotates arm against resistance
3) Palpate in between infraspinatus & teres major (bigger)
Teres minor
8 of 31
Prone
1) One forearm hanging over the edge of the bed
2) Put arm in between knees for resistance and allow client to medially rotate arm
3) Palpate from lateral border of inferior angle towards humerus
• Feel tendon underneath armpit next to tendon of lat
Teres major
9 of 31
Supine
1) Patient has one arm up towards the ceiling
2) Passively protract the scapula
3) Palpate deep underneath armpit, more medially to latissimus dorsi
Subscapularis
10 of 31
Prone
1) Arms by side of body
2) Extend arm (can do with resistance)

Sitting
1) Place arm on physio’s shoulder
2) Push down (to extend & adduct)
Latissimus dorsi
11 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist elbow flexion with hand supinated
Biceps brachii
12 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist elbow flexion with hand pronated
2) Palpate muscle on the lateral side of arm in between biceps & triceps
- Should feel prominent edge
Brachialis
13 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist elbow flexion with hand in a neutral position
2) Can palpate along length of forearm
Brachioradialis
14 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist elbow extension
Triceps brachii
15 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist pronation of the forearm in a 90* elbow flexion position
2) Palpate just distally to the biceps tendon in the posteroanterior forearm
- Careful not to confuse muscle with flexors
Pronator teres
16 of 31
Sitting
1) Start in elbow flexion with hand pronated
2) Sink fingers deep in dip medial to radius
3) Resist supination of forearm

• Deep to extensors on lateral (little finger side) side of forearm
Supinator
17 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist radial deviation
2) See prominent tendon near radius on wrist
3) Palpate muscle from tendon running up forearm
Flexor carpi radialis
18 of 31
Sitting
1) Cup hand as though holding something with arm supinated
2) See prominent tendon in centre of wrist
3) Palpate muscle from tendon running up forearm
Palmaris longus
19 of 31
Sitting
1) Resist ulnar deviation
2) See prominent tendon near ulnar on wrist
3) Palpate muscle from tendon running up forearm
Flexor carpi ulnaris
20 of 31
Sitting
1) Forearm fully supinated
2) Place fingers on proximal medial forearm
3) Patient moves fingers at MCP joints (pretend to type)
• Makes up main body of forearm
• Can also feel in dip next to ulna
Flexor digitorum superficialis
21 of 31
Sitting
1) Forearm fully supinated
2) Place fingers on proximal medial forearm just distal & posterior to medial epicondyle
3) Patient moves fingers at IP & MCP joints
• Can also feel in dip next to ulna
Flexor digitorum profundus
22 of 31
Sitting
1) Forearm fully supinated
2) Patient flexes and relaxes thumb
3) Palpate deep the tendon & muscle on radial side of forearm
Flexor pollicis longus
23 of 31
Sitting
1) Flex elbow 90*
2) Resist ulnar deviation from a neutral position
3) Palpate muscle just above shaft of ulna
4) See prominent tendon on ulna side of wrist
Extensor carpi ulnaris
24 of 31
Sitting
1) Flex elbow 90* with hand in neutral position
2) Keep flexing little finger

• Tendon should be lateral to tendon of extensor digitorum
• Smaller & sits below extensor digitorum (in neutral hand position)
