Clues

  • a broader view of poverty and deprivation that focuses on how people are shut out from participation in activities such as paid work, politics and social activities (6, 9)
  • a situation in which people are said to become so dependent on the provisions of the welfare state that they lose the will to work (7, 10)
  • long-term dependency on welfare benefits and the deliberate avoidance of work (10, 7)
  • sociological theories that explain poverty by focusing on the way society is structured or organised (10, 10)
  • the idea that people living in very poor conditions develop a culture or a way of life to deal with their poverty that emphasises living in the present rather than worrying about the future (7, 2, 7)
  • the idea that poverty and deprivation continue between generations so that families become locked into a cycle they cannot escape from (5, 2, 11)
  • Victorian notion that some people living in poverty were responsible for their poverty and so did not deserve charity; examples might be unmarried mothers and people who drank too much alcohol (11, 4)
  • Victorian notion that some people living in poverty were ‘deserving’ of charity because they were not seen as responsible for their plight (e.g. because of disability) (9, 4)
