State the two ways fuel can be embarked.
RAS(Replenishment At Sea)
Bowser Refuelling
1 of 12
What is the purpose of the displaced tanks ?
Filled to 90% it acts as a ballast and maintains the ships level of buoyancy, wear when fuel is used it is replaced with sea water.
2 of 12
What is the purpose of an un displaced tank ?
Filled to 95% and holds clean water free fuel
3 of 12
Why are centrifuges used, and what is there operating RPM ?
Centrifuges are used to separate water and dirt from fuel that has been transferred from the displaced tank.
operates at 5000RPM
4 of 12
What three things are tested for in fuel sampling ?
contaminants
dirt
surfactants
5 of 12
State 4 types of fuel test.
Visual
Water reaction
Colour test
Diesel fuel filtration test kit(DFTK)
6 of 12
What does good fuel look like (visual test)
Good fuel is clear and bright
Bad fuel is dark and cloudy
7 of 12
Describe the process for the water reaction test.
20ML of water is added to 80ML of fuel shaken then allowed to settle, once settled the cloudy gap between the water and fuel should not exceed 2ML.
8 of 12
Describe the colour test.
A "Lovibond" colour comparator is used to measure the colour of the fuel, the darker the fuel the older it is.
9 of 12
describe the diesel fuel filtration test(kit)
Used to indicate how fast a filter will become blocked, 250Ml is passed through a filter and the differential pressure should not reach 15PSi.
10 of 12
State 4 hazards associated with working around fuel.
Fire and explosion
Toxicity
Dermatitis
Pollution
11 of 12
State 5 common causes for spillage
Incorrect valve alignment
Not following the permit to work
Poor senior management oversight/operation
Equiptment failure
Human error
