What is the purpose of a gas turbine ?
To convert heat energy into reciprocating motion
1 of 14
state the two propulsion lay outs
IEP-intergrated electrical propulsion(Type 45)
CODLAG-combination of diesel electric and gas(type 23)
2 of 14
state five advantages of gas turbines
Ability to get underway fast
Ease of operation with emphasis on RC
High power/weight ratio
Minimum shipboard maintenance
Low man power requirement
3 of 14
State and explain all stages of the 3 stage filter
Stage 1-"spray eliminator" made of baffle plates removing water from air
Stage 2-made of a knit mesh filter removes particles and combines remaining water
Stage 3-another set of baffle plates to remove any remaining water

Leaks
9 of 14
Describe wet motoring
The gas turbine is turned over using the starter motor with the fuel system on and the igniters isolated by removing there fuses, done to test fuel system after maintenance.
10 of 14
Describe dry motoring
The gas turbine is turned over using the starter motor with the fuel system and igniters isolated, done after wet motoring and used to turn over the compressors for cleaning.
11 of 14
Why and when is water washing carried out ?
Water Washing is carried out to remove fowling from the compressor blades and is done on a time basis(100HRs/2 Months spey, 150Hrs WR21)
