the Shakty trials (1928) they were trials of industrial specialists who were accused of crimes like sabotage. Ryutin (1932) published an anti-Stalin pamphlet executed in 1937. in 1933- 6 british engineers were tried for industrial espionage.

December 1934- he was shot outside his leningrad HQ, the only witness his bodyguard was killied in an accident while with KGB officers.

What were show trials and who was affected by them?
they were propaganda excersises in which high profil prisoners were publicly tried with the outcomes often pre-determinated, Zinoviev and Kamenev were victims of the show trials.

What were motives of the terror?
Stalins personality, terror was part of the system since the civil war, part of economic change, fear of foreign powers bred fear and suspicion, party official were over-zealous, the red army was targeted for a 'plot against stalin'.

How was Trotsky used in the terror?
you could be accused of being a trotskyite, it was a propaganda name to say you were undermining socialism, stalinist agents found Trotsky and murdered him in 1940.

What was the terror's impact on the party?
between 1933+6 terror affected those falling short of standards, between 1936+39 action was organised by NKVD, less than 10% of the party had jouined pre-1920 addmissions were opened up, leadership was not as affected as often thought.

the army went from under 1milion in1936 to 5 millionin 1941, up to 23,000 officers were shotp or dismissed.

was shot in 1937 for plotting against Stalin, because the red army had worked with the nazi forces on tactics leading Stalin to become suspisious.

What was the impact of the terror on the population?
during the Yezhov years (1936-38) over 7 million were arrested with 1 million exectuted. 10-15 million may have died from torture, exhile and the gulags. less than 10% survived the camps.

What were the Kolyma camps?
Gulags in North- east Siberia, rich in expensive minerals but condidtions were extremely bad (-45 in winter). by 1932 almost 10,000 prisoners worked there.
