State the name given to the model which describes the atomic structure.
The nuclear model
1 of 11
State the 3 sub atomic particles, where they are located, their mass and their relative charge
Protons: Found in the nucleus, mass of 1, charge of +1. Electrons: Found in shells, mass of 1/1836, charge of -1. Neutrons: Found in the nucleus, mass of 1, charge of 0.
2 of 11
How do you calculate the mass of an atom?
Protons + neutrons=mass.
3 of 11
State the overall charge of an atom
The overall charge of an atom is neutral, the number of protons are the same as the number of electrons.
4 of 11
What are charged atoms called?
Ions
5 of 11
How does an atom become charged in relation to their atomic structure?
If a proton is removed then a negative ion is formed. If an electron is removed, a positive ion is formed.
6 of 11
Define the word "compound"
Two or more elements chemically bonded together, for example, water.
7 of 11
Define the word element:
Materials which are made from one type of atom, for example, pure gold
8 of 11
What is the term given to atoms which bond with 2 atoms to form a molecule
Diatomic
9 of 11
Molecules can be both compounds and elements, true or false?
True
10 of 11
which sub-atomic particle defines the element.
The number of protons, atoms with a different mass but the same protons are still the same element but are rather different variations of the same element, these are called isotopes
