The Lymphatic System

?
Functions of lymphatic system
Maintain balance of fluid - fluid homeostasis
1 of 13
Functions of lymphatic system 2
Forms immune system and defend body from bacteria.
2 of 13
Where are B and T cells made?
B- Cells- lymph nodes at birth and mature in bone marrow.
T-Cells- Made in bone marrow but mature in the thymus gland.
3 of 13
When T- lymphocytes are produced, is this process humoral or cell mediated immunity?
T-Cells - cell-mediated immunity.
4 of 13
When B- lymphocytes are produced, is this process humoral or cell mediated immunity?
B- cells - Humoral immunity. Antigen- specific antibodies.
5 of 13
What are antibodies made of? What shape are they?
Made of protein. Y- shaped.
6 of 13
Primary response,
Single B- cell activated by single antigen. Divides many times to produce CLONE of B- cell. Produces specific antibodies. These B- cells can become memory cells and persist in the body.
7 of 13
NATURAL ACTIVE immunity?
Happens after infection with the actual disease. Produces memory cells to destroy pathogen quickly in the future if re exposed.
8 of 13
Secondary response.
Second exposure to antigen. Memory cells divide to produce large amount of B - cells. Make specific antibodies and usually destroys pathogen before illness occurs.
9 of 13
ARTIFICIAL PASSIVE immunity
Injection of antibodies from the blood of immune humans or from non-human animals. These injections are short term and do not provide long term protection but protects from infection.
10 of 13
ARTIFICIAL ACTIVE immunity.
Intended exposure of a person to antigens in a vaccine.
11 of 13
NATURAL PASSIVE immunity.
From mother to foetus. Protection for up to 6 months after birth. Breast milk can also be natural passive immunity.
12 of 13
Role of T- Cell
Protect body from cancerous cells and cells that have become infected by pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses. Directly kills them.
