?
Suburbanisation
When people move out of the city centre to the outskirts.
1 of 7
Suburbanisation was driven by...
...high pop. density + congestion in city centres, pollution from industry + traffic, cheaper land + house prices further away from the city centre, greenbelts, quality of life better closer to the countryside.
2 of 7
Urban Areas Push Factors
Overcrowded, polluted, high crime rates, little green space, new houses in the suburbs, deindustrialisation in city centres, increased unemployment in cities meaning less money is spent there so local shops and services close.
3 of 7
Suburban Areas Pull Factors
Low population density, safer, family-friendly, open green spaces, improvements in public transport, new housing estates in the suburbs, rent is cheaper which attracts businesses so more jobs and services become available.
4 of 7
Economic Consequences
There are fewer people living in city centres and parts of cities that are mainly offices are deserted after work hours, meaning shops, restaurants etc may struggle for customers and close. As businesses leave, unemployment increases.
5 of 7
Social Consequences
As people and businesses move out, some buildings become abandoned and derelict. Wealthier people move to the suburbs meaning the people left behind are poorer and often foreign immigrants, which can lead to economic and ethnic segregation.
6 of 7
Environmental Consequences
New housing estates built on countryside affects wildlife habitats. Many own cars and may commute into the city to work, increasing air pollution and congestion. As urban areas spread, more ground is concreted over, increasing the risk of flooding.
