What is a great strength of lab experiments?
researcher has control over the variables. They are high in internal validity as the experimenter can be sure that any effect on the DV is due to the IV
1 of 8
Discuss why lab experiments being low in ecological validity is a problem
the environments aren't natural , the participants know they are being studied so might act differently, the IV and DV may be operationalised in a way that doesn't represent normal every day experiences. Setting is low in mundane realism
2 of 8
what are some issues with field experiments?
harder to control for extraneous variables. Ethical issues as they don't know they are being recorded.
3 of 8
what are some benefits of field experiments?
more natural so participant likely to behave as they normally would
4 of 8
what are some strengths of natural experiments?
allow psychologists to study real life problems so high in ecological validity and mundane realism. Allows research where IV can't directly be manipulated for practical or ethical reasons
5 of 8
what are some weaknesses of natural experiments?
can't demonstrate casual relationships because the IV can't be manipulated. Threat to internal validity as there may be confounding variables as random allocation might not be possible.
6 of 8
What are strengths of quasi experiments?
allows comparisons between types of people
7 of 8
what are some weaknesses of quasi experiments?
low internal validity as the people may know they are being studied
can only be used where conditions vary naturally
