Lab experiments:
Lab studies are conducted in highly-controlled environments.
The researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV.
Strengths:
- Lab experiments have high control over extraneous and confounding variables, allowing the researcher to illustrate a cause and effect relationship. This leads to high internal validity.
- Easy to replicate. This makes it easier to check the validity.
Weaknesses:
- They have low external validity due to the environment being artificial.
- They lack generaliseability for the same reason.
- They have low mundane realism as tasks are rarely realistic day-to-day tasks.
Field experiments:
Field experiments take place in a natural setting.
