  • Types of Experiments
    • Quasi
      • The IV is naturally occurring and is not manipulated by the researcher (because it cannot)
      • Strengths
        • Can look at variables that would be impossible or unethical to investigate otherwise
        • can be carried out either in a lab or natural environment
      • Weaknesses
        • Difficult to establish cause and effect
        • Sampling bias more likely to occur
    • Laboratory
      • The IV has been manipulated and the experiment is conducted in a controlled or artificial environment
      • Strengths
        • High control
        • High replicability
        • Cause and effect relationship can be found
        • most scientific (use of scientific equipment)
      • Weaknesses
        • High chance of demand characteristics
        • Often low in ecological validity
    • Field
      • The IV has been manipulated and conducted in a natural environment (where you would expect that behaviour)
      • Strengths
        • Cause and effect relationship can be found
        • High(er) in ecological validity
      • Weaknesses
        • Harder to control variables
        • Higher chance of confounding variables
        • Difficult to replicate
        • Less scientific
