The aims of Qualitative Research is to
Understand the physical and social world through ‘representative’ lenses;
1 of 20
Qualtive Research looks at
Subjective meanings and observations held by actors;
2 of 20
Common methods of Qualitative research are
Archival and historical research; interviews, ethnography data are images, words, texts and stories
3 of 20
Key issues on thinking critically about qualitative methods
Researcher’s positionality Reflection and reflexivity Ethical and moral questions Power and privilege Researcher-researched roles and relationships Subjectivity Responsibilities and duties to research participants

Density (p) =
Mass (M) divided by Volume (V)
5 of 20
Area of a circle (a) =
πr2
6 of 20
The volume of a triangular prism can be found
by multiplying the base times the height
7 of 20
The scale of measurement, degree of normality, and sample size (n) determine whether
parametric or non-parametric statistical tests should be employed
8 of 20
Parametric
Data must be interval or ratio scale Data must be normally distributed Number of observations should exceed n=30
9 of 20
Non-parametric
All data that are nominal or ordinal Interval/ratio data that are not normally distributed Small sample sizes (typically
10 of 20
Parametric test to show difference
t-test (one sample and two sample) Analysis of variance (ANOVA)
11 of 20
Parametric test to show relationship
Pearson Correlation
12 of 20
Non- parametric tes to show difference
Chi-Square (one and two way) Mann-Whitney test Kruskal-Wallis test
13 of 20
Non- Parametric tests to show relationship
spearmans rank
14 of 20
Statistical tests are concerned with rejecting the
null hypothesis in favour of the alternative hypothesis
15 of 20
Null Hypothesis -
H0: There is no statistically significant difference between the means of sample A and sample B
16 of 20
Alternative hypothesis
H1: There is a statistically significant difference between the means of sample A and sample B
17 of 20
You are the one who sets the confidence interval but it must be at
a recognised threshold ( 95 or 99)
18 of 20
Once you’ve set your threshold, if your significance value falls to the left (higher),
you accept the hypothesis
19 of 20
If it falls to the right
you reject
