Aim of Sperry's study?
To investigate the effects of hemisphere disconnection + functions of left and right hemisphere.
1 of 16
Method?
Quasi-experiement + case studies (research intensive study of 11 p's)
2 of 16
IV + DV?
IV= Presence/absence of split brain. DV= whether participants could name, recongnise + draw objects.
3 of 16
Participants?
11 p's(male+female). All=severe epilepsy+undergone surgery (split brain) + right-handed.
4 of 16
Procedure?
certain equipment produced to present equipment in 1 hemisphere. visions divided to left+right vision field, hands hidden from own view. silence during study.

What were the 4 main types of tests conducted?
1). Visual Tests. 2). Tactile Tests. 3). Visual and Tactile Tests. 4). Tests of the right Hemisphere.
6 of 16
Visual test?
image flashed foe 1/10th secondary on left + right fixation point.
7 of 16
Results of one visual test?
RVF-name object+find object from array of items with RH. LVF- draw object with LH, find object from array of items with LH, CANNOT name it stuck in right hemisphere
8 of 16
Results of both visual tests?
RFV-name what they see in RFV, unaware they've seen anything else. LVF- haven't seen anything but can draw with left hand when close eyes. +. surprised what they drawn +name what they've drawn.
9 of 16
Tactile test?
involves touch. p's could not see their hand/objects they were holding.
10 of 16
Results of Tactile tests?
Object in right hand-name,describe object, find object using right hand, cannot name same object with left hand. Object in left hand-cannot name/describe object, find object using left hand, cannot find same object using right hand.
11 of 16
Visual Tactile tests?
Involves sight + touch. p's have to find object from an array.
12 of 16
Results of Visual Tactile tests?
RVF-find objects from array using right hand, cannot find objects using left hand. LVF- find items from array using left hand, cannot find item using right hand.
13 of 16
Test of right Hemisphere?
Array of geometric shapes presented to both visual fields. Nude picture flashed to LVF(seen by left hemisphere)- asked whether they'd seen anything else expect geometric shapes.
14 of 16
Results of Test of right Hemisphere?
P's blushed, giggled + embarrassed. Right hemisphere cannot produce speech to answer the question directly.
15 of 16
Conclusions?
1) left hemisphere=most dominant (where language skills are based) 2) Right hemisphere=pictures hemisphere, specials in tasks ,i.e- drawing. 3) severing of corpus collosum =stop communication from one another.
