Define Birth rate and TFR.
Birth rate=the number of births per 1000 members of the population. TFR = The average number of children a woman will have throughout her lifetime.

What are the three main reasons for the UK's falling birth rate?
- Falling IMR: (154/1000 in 1900, now = 5) - Changes in role of women: Better access to divorce, abortion, contraception, education, paid employment etc. Child centredness: Children now have a longer period of dependency, seen as economic burden

Define death rate and IMR.
Death rate: number of deaths per 100 members of the population. IMR: deaths under the age of 1 per 1000 live births

What has the death rate in the UK fallen from?
18 to 9 between 1900 and 2005.

Why has there been population growth?
Because the falling death rate has more than balanced the falling birth rate.

Increased life expectancy. 1901: males = 45 years, females =49 2005 males = 77 years, females 81 years.

- Improved public health: public sanitation, clean water etc Medical improvements: Widespread immunisation, antibiotics since the late '30's. - Better nutrition - Occupational change - Improved welfare provision

The amount of people Immigrating to a country compared to the amount emigrating.

State the main Emigration trends in the UK.
- Until the 1980's --> UK experienced more emigration than immigration mainly to Old British Commonwealth countries. - Main reason: economic --> after II WW a weak UK economy encouraged people to leave. - Now: most emigration to EU countries

- First part of 20th century: Most immigrants = Irish - 1950s: Carribean - '60s & '70s = Indian and asians - Last 20 years: Europe

What have been the main causes of immigration?
Economic and political persecution. Since 1980's: immigration laws limited movement from non-European countries

Around 200,000 a year.

Entry into the EU of many Eastern European states.
