What is meant by the term INTERNALISATION?
A type of conformity where we take the majority view because we accept it as correct. This leads to permanent change in behaviour even when the group is absent.

It is an explanation of conformity, we agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe it is correct. This may lead to internalisation.

Explanation of conformity, says we agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to be accepted, gain social approval and be liked. May lead to compliance.

Explain what is meant by UNANIMITY in relation to conformity.
The extent to which all members of a group agree. Usually produces greatest degree of conformity, for example in Asch's study.

Identify another variable other than unanimity that have an affect on conformity.
GROUP SIZE - in Asch's research he increased the size of the group by adding more confederates, increasing the size of the majority. Conformitiy increased with group size but only to a point levelling off when the majority was greater than three.

What is meant by the term SOCIAL ROLES.
The "parts" people play as members of various social groups. EG. Student. They are accompanied by expectations we and others have of what is appropriate behaviour in each role.

What is meant by the term OBEDIENCE.
Form of social influence in which an individual follows a direct order. Person issuing the order is usually a figure of authority, who has the ability to punish when obedient behaviour is not forthcoming.

What is meant by AGENTIC STATE.
Mental state where we feel no personal responsibility for our behaviour because we believe ourselves to be acting for an authority figure. Allows us to be obedient towards a destructive authority figure.

What is meant by LEGITIMACY OF AUTHORITY.
Suggests we are more likely to obey people who we perceive to have an authority over us. This authority is legitimate within the social hierarchy.

Explain the term DISPOSITIONAL EXPLANATION in relation to obedience.
Highlights the importance of the individual's personality. Such as explanations are often contrasted with situational explanations.

What is meant by the AUTHORITATRIAN PERSONALITY.
Adorno argued this type of person is especially susceptible to obeying people in authority. Such individuals are thought to be submissive to those of higher status and dismissive of inferiors.

What is meant by the term SOCIAL SUPPORT.
Presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can help others to do the same. These people act as models to show others that resistance to social influence is possible.

Outline the LOCUS OF CONTROL as an explanation of resistance to social influence.
The sense we each have about what directs events in our lives. Internals believe that they are responsible for what happenes to them (INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL). Externals believe it is mainly a matter of luck or other outside forces.

What is meant by the term MINORITY INFLUENCE.
Minority people persuade others to adapt to their beliefs, attitudes or behaviours. Leads to internalisation or conversion, private change as well as public.

When societies adopt new attitudes, beliefs, and ways of doing things. EG gay rights.
