What is conformity?
It's the tendency for people to adopt to the behaviour, attitudes and values of other members of the group.

what is compliance?
conform because you want gain approval. agree publicly but privately disagree. Associated with normative social influence. more likely to happen if you think you are under suveillance by the group and when situation is unambiguous.

What is internalisation?
you accept the group's views and want to be right. agree with group publicly and privately. Associated with informational social influence. more likely to happen when situation is ambiguous and you believe others are experts.

what is identification?
conforming because you want to be associated with a group. has elements of both internalisation and compliance.

Linkenbach & Perkins campaign aimed at 12-17 year olds in Montana showed when teenagers exposed to normative message most of their peers did not smoke, later on less likely to take up smoking.correlation between people's normative belief & behavio

Wittenbrink & Henley. participants exposed to negative comparison information about African americans reported more negative beliefs about black target individual if represented as majority view. changed social stereotype

participants judgements of political candidates in a debate influenced by reaction of other participants. saw reaction of other participants during a debate, changed behaviour accordingly
