Situation ethics

This resource will help you learn the 6 principles and 4 presumptions of situation ethics.

?
Only love is ‘intrinsically’ good. Actions themselves are not intrinsically good or bad.
(1st Principle) Teleological, consquential theory, it all depends on whether that action promotes the most loving result.
1 of 6
Love becomes the ruling norm of Christian decision making
(2nd principle) Situationists strive to ensure that the end result promotes love when making decisions.
2 of 6
Love and justice are the same for “justice is love distributed”.
(3rd principle) Love is Justice in action, or “love using its head” as Fletcher put it.
3 of 6
“Love wills the neighbour’s good whether we like him or not”.
(4th principle) Love should not be preferential, not sentimental. It goes out to anyone, whether we like them or not, and is unconditional. It does not ask anything back in return. .“God makes his sun shine on the righteous and on sinners” [Matthew]
4 of 6
“Only the end justifies the means –nothing else”
(5th principle) To know whether something is the right thing to do you must predict the end result and do the thing which will produce the most love.
5 of 6
Decisions are made situationally, not prescriptively
(6th principle) Jesus showed this when it was most loving to do so e.g.healing and picking corn on the Sabbath because “Sabbath was made for the good of man, not man for the Sabbath”. Situation Ethics assumes you can handle responsibility.
