Where in the UK is single transferrable vote (STV) used?
Northern Ireland Assembly
1 of 5
How does STV work?
-Country divided into multi-member constituencies
-Voters number candidates in order of preferance
-Droop Formula calculates whether or not candidates reach the quota
-If not, lowest votes get their second votes redistriubuted
-OR winner gets excess votes
2 of 5
What is the Droop Formula?
(Total number of votes cast/Number of seats available + 1) + 1
3 of 5
Give three advantages of STV
-Gives large voter choice (various parties and candidates)
-Encourages positive campaigning (candidates try to gain transferred votes too)
-Votes to seats is highly proportional (no need for concentrated support or wasted votes)
4 of 5
Give four disadvantages of STV
-Donkey voting (numbering in order of appearance)
-Hard to understand (takes longer to count and it's harder to vote)
-Weak link between members and voters (multiple members for one constituency)
-Coalition more likely (arguably less stable)
