What is the duration of STM?
18-30 seconds without rehearsal
1 of 12
Name a study that studies the duration of STM
Peterson + Peterson (1959) - trigram study
2 of 12
Outline the procedure of Peterson + Peterson's study on duration of STM
Procedure: lab experiment, 24 psychology students, had to recall meaningless trigrams and count backwards in 3s or 4s at intervals to prevent rehearsal of trgrams, each time extending the intervals
3 of 12
Peterson + Peterson's (1959) study results:
results: the longer the interval, the less accurate the recall. at 3 second interval, around 80% of trigrams recalled correctly, at 18 second interval only 10% correctly recalled.

What is the capacity of STM?
5-9 items (7 + or - 2)
5 of 12
Name a study that studies the capacity of STM
Jacob's (1887) digit span
6 of 12
Outline the procedure of Jacob's study on capacity
used 443 female students aged 8-19, had to repeat back a string of letters and numbers in the correct order with the number of items gradually increasing, until they couldn't repeat back correctly.
7 of 12
Jacocb's (1887) study results:
average span of 7.3 letters and 9.3 words

How is STM encoded?
acoustically/phonologically

Outline the Multi Store Model of Memory
The sensory store picks up information through the senses and if attention is given, it moves to STM. If the info is not rehearsed it is forgotten but if rehearsed, is transferred to LTM. Throughout the process, information may decay or is forgotten.
10 of 12
Outline two strengths of the MSM
1) KF who sustained brain injuries in a motorcycle crash. His LTM was unaffected but was only able to recall last bit of info in his STM 2) the model can account for primary + recency effect -can remember last thing as in STM + 1st because its in LTM
11 of 12
Outline two weakness of the MSM
1) Model is too simple - it suggests STM + LTM are single, seperate stores operating in a uniform fashion as WMM shows 2) Rehearsal is too simple, ignores other factors like motivation, effect + strategy which underpins learning
