Repetition keeps information in the STM and will eventually create a long term memory, they proposed direct relationship between rehearsal in STM and strength of the LTM . More information rehearsed better will be remembered

Information is held in STM so can be used for immediate tasks , it has a limited duration and if information isn’t rehearsed it will decay . When new information enters the STM it displaces other information, as STM has limited capacity
