Unorthodox monk with "powers" who the tsarina thought could heal her son. She trusted him and would not hear anything bad said about him. He was her closest advisor and dismissed govt. officials, appointed new ones, interfered with important decision

people in towns were starving because the railways we're clogged up with military transport so food couldn't reach them

What happened in March 1917
Women started rioting - they wanted peace and bread. Tsarina called troops but they mutinied and joined the riots. Workers set up the Petrograd Society to coordinate the revolution. The tsar returned too late and was forced by the Duma to abdicate

They wanted to continue the war. People began to turn on the govt when an attack on Austria failed, and began to look to Lenin

Wanted to continue the war, was unable to end food and fuel shortages, did nothing to solve the land problem (peasants taking over nobles land) and did little to deal with opponents (Bolsheviks and Mensheviks). People hated the PG
