What are four increasing reasons fro energy consumption?
Affluence, Population, Technology & Economic growth
1 of 25
What energy is used to power Britain?
Fossil fuels, nuclear energy and renewable energy
2 of 25
What generates electricity day to day?
The national grid
3 of 25
What does 'renewable' mean?
Energy sources that are replenished and not exhausted
4 of 25
What is Biomass?
This is recently-formed material derived from living things
5 of 25
What are 'Energy from waste' plants?
Burning biomass and non-recyclable rubbish to generate electricity
6 of 25
What is Hydroelectric power?
HEP is generated when river water is trapped behind a dam and used to turn turbines.
7 of 25
What is wave/tidal power?
Wave energy harnesses the power of small movements on the surface of the sea. Tidal energy harnesses larger movements of the tides.
8 of 25
What is Geothermal power?
This uses heat within the Earth to generate electricity.
9 of 25
What is a Ground Source heat pump?
They use the heat from the Sun that is stored within the surface of the Earth
10 of 25
What is Solar power?
Power from the sun
11 of 25
What is Wind power?
Wind turbines convert air movements into electricity.
12 of 25
What does non-renewable mean?
A resource that cannot be replaced when it is used up, such as oil, natural gas or coal
13 of 25
What is a carbon footprint?
A measure of how much carbon is used through the activities of a person, company or country
14 of 25
What do Carbon footprints take into account?
Goods and products, Transport and Food Miles
15 of 25
Fossil Fuels
coal and gas power stations can now re-use wasted heat in. These are called combined-cycle systems. Re-using heat makes the most out of the fossil fuel. Also, some power stations now burn small amounts of biomass alongside fossil fuels.
16 of 25
Fossil Fuels (Part 2)
This is called co-firing and it makes the fossil fuel last longer. Fracking could exploit shale gas, which would increase supplies of fossil fuels.
17 of 25
Nuclear power
uranimum fuel rods still have some uranium left within them after they have been used. Reprocessing recovers the uranium from spent fuel rods so that it can be reused.
18 of 25
Nuclear power (Part 2)
This doesn't create new supplies of uranium, but it does use the existing supplies more efficiently. This means that uranium supplies will last longer
19 of 25
Name three countries that produce the most oil.
Saudi Arabia, Russia and the USA
20 of 25
Name three countries that have largest coal reserves.
USA, Russia and China
21 of 25
Name three countries that have the largest natural gas reserves.
Russia, Iran and Qatar
22 of 25
Name three countries that have the largest uranium reserves.
Australia, Kazakhstan and Russia
23 of 25
What are Food Miles?
The distance food travels from the producer and consumer.
24 of 25
What energy saving measures are used in new homes?
Insulation, Thermostats and smart energy meters
