PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION:
the observer gets involved in the behaviour they are observing
1 of 19
NON-PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION:
he observer does not get involved in the behaviour they are observing
2 of 19
OVERT OBSERVATION:
the observer is seen by the people being observed
3 of 19
COVERT OBSERVATION:
the observer is not seen by the people being observed
4 of 19
CONTROLLED OBSERVATION:
some variables in the environment are regulated by the researcher, reducing the ‘naturalness’ of the environment (and therefore the naturalness of the behaviour being studied)
5 of 19
NATURALISTIC OBSERVATION:
behaviour is studied in the natural environment where everything has been left as it normally is. Researcher does not interfere in anyway
6 of 19
BEHAVIOURAL CATEGORIES:
when a target behaviour is broken up into components that are observable and measurable
7 of 19
EVENT SAMPLING:
a target behaviour or event is first established then the researcher records this event every time it occurs
8 of 19
TIME SAMPLING:
a target individual or group is first established then the researcher records their behaviour in a fixed time frame e.g every 60 seconds
9 of 19
OPEN REVIEWING:
the authors are made public
10 of 19
PUBLICATION BIASED:
when only headline grabbing findings are produced
11 of 19
AIM:
“to investigate whether”
12 of 19
HYPOTHESIS:
“it is predicted that”
13 of 19
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:
the thing you change/manipulate
14 of 19
DEPENDENT VARIABLE:
the thing the researcher is measuring
15 of 19
OPERATIONALISATION:
ensure that variables are in a form that can be easily tested. Define variables so you can measure them:
16 of 19
EXTRANEOUS VARIABLE:
any variable that may (Other than IV) have an effect on the DV if it is not controlled ( ev = nuisance variables)
17 of 19
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN:
refers to how participants are allocated to the different conditions (or IV groups) in an experiment
18 of 19
SCHOLARLY JOURNALS:
Research papers get published in scholarly journals. They contain in-depth reports of research. The articles are written by academics and then reviewed by experts in the field..
