desire to be liked- conforming to the group so we are not left out

the desire to be right- we dont want to appear stupid so we look to others on advice of how to act

what was the process of Sherif's study (1935)
lab experiment of th autokinetic effect small spot of light was projected onto a screen and appears to move even though its not. when asked individually pp's estimated movements were considerably different from 20-80cm.

pp's were split into groups of three two estimates were similar other was way off. he found the group converged to a common estimate the pp who estimated way off conformed to group

lab experiment pps took part in line judgement task. pp put in room with 7 confeds. each person in room had to state which comparison line was most like the target line the real pp aloways answered last confeds always gave the wrong answer. 16 trials

32% of pps conformed to incorrect majority 75% confromed on at least one trial

advantage- reliable, people will still conform now disadvantage-not generalisable, 100 middle class american males so its ethnocentric

furman and duke (1988) found music majors did not change their views but non music majors were significantly effected by the preferances of the confederates

pps volunteered to take part in study randomly allocated into two groups prisoners and prison guards to spend two weeks in cells prisoners were arrested at home and given prisoner number guards given uniform including sticks and mirrored sunglasses.

called off ater six days instead of 14 guards had became two brutal, two prisoners had nervous breakdowns, 1 had nerous rash, 1 went on hunger strike
