Composite material. Composed of individual veneers of timber which each grain layer being at right angles to each other. Veneers are bonded together by synthetic resin & pressure. Less likely to warp or split due to layering construction.
Plywood

Built up with a core of softwood strips bonded together with adhesive & covered with a sheet of plywood on either side. Used as a building material & in furniture including fitted kitchens & bedrooms
Blockboard

Made up of small chips of wood bonded together with adhesive & formed into sheets by compression. Inexpensive, often covered with a plastic laminate or wood veneer & used in furniture.
Chipboard

Made from wood fibres that have been pulped. Pulp is put under pressure until the fibres bond to produce a tough board that is smooth on one side & rough on the other. Not as strong as other boards.
Hardboard

Quality board, relatively cheap. Composed of fine wood dust & resin pressed into a board. Can be worked, shaped & machined easily. Paint can be applied without the need for an undercoat or primer.
