Politics- Conservatism

?
Hierarchy
They believe that hierarchy is natural and desirable. Classical conservatives believed it was static, but more modern conservatives (neoliberals) have accepted some degree of social mobility.
1 of 18
Elites
That they exist, and that they have a right to rule as they are best equipped to do so through knowledge of traditions (the roots of society). They are a small group with a lot of wealth. (Grammar Schools 2017 manifesto)
2 of 18
Individualism
That the individual is the most important member in society. They should be free from state intervention and private property should be allowed (Right to Buy 1980).
3 of 18
Inequality
It is natural and good, wealth is a reward for hard work and talent. People are encouraged to work harder to achieve more wealth, not rely on the state (Thatcher being against a 'nanny state'. these ideas have persisted into austerity measures)
4 of 18
Organic society
Everyone and everything in society has a role. Some things are more important than others (tradition is the root of society, for example) but all are needed to make it work. Reason Tory logo is a tree.
5 of 18
Inclusiveness
Believed in by some one nation Tories under Disraeli. Equality under the law and in decision making.
6 of 18
Nationalism
Rose tinted view of your country's past, sceptical of cultural integration and immigration- links to patriotism. (UKIP, Brexit, and the EU ref are all examples of nationalism).
7 of 18
Patriotism
pride in your country's history, geography, politics etc. Shown through thinks like teaching British values in schools/ Gove introducing a curriculum of English books.
8 of 18
Authority
Valuing authority and law and order- New Right were socially authoritarian with a strong police force. There's a focus on how people should live their lives and a strong stance on national defence (Trident under Thatcher being upheld today)
9 of 18
Paternalism
Disraeli/ One Nation. Looking after the poor and uniting everyone under the flag in order to prevent a revolution. May claims to be one nation.
10 of 18
Pragmatism
Some Tories claim that they are not an ideology at all, but rather they are a reaction to ideology. they adopt the policies that are the most popular with the electorate or what the country needs at the time. May capping gas/electric bills.
11 of 18
Opposition to ideology
They are opposed to/ distrust ideology. Thatcherism can be seen as ending this.
12 of 18
Libertarianism
As limited control as possible- can be economic or social.
13 of 18
Authoritarianism
Belief in authority can lead to this- strong positions on social and moral issues i.e. Section 28 and Victorian family values.
14 of 18
Economic liberalism
As limited economic control as possible. State should have no role in economic regulations. (Thatcher denationalising BT and steel)
15 of 18
Protectionism
Subsidising farmers or national industry to ensure them a degree of price certainty. Trade is restricted by tariffs- Corn Law repeal by Peel split the party C19th.
16 of 18
Private property
Seen as making people conservative. Gives you a stake in society- something to pass on to children (again, Right to Buy which the Tories in 2017 pursued along with temporary council houses that will turn private).
17 of 18
Ideology vs Pragmatic
T was ideology (or was it just necessary after militant TUs in 70s?). Recent austerity too quick and not evolutionary, cannot be pragmatic. Even T didn't change education/health and current have. BUT- accept EU, Scottish ref/ gay marriage.
