Physiology lecture 10

HideShow resource information
Where are baroreceptors located?
Carotid sinus, aortic arch
1 of 16
Baroreceptor afferent pathway
Glossopharyngeal/ vagus
2 of 16
Baroreceptor efferent pathway
Sympathetic - heart/blood vessels Parasympathetic - heart
3 of 16
Where is the baroreceptor control centre located?
Medulla of brain stem
4 of 16
What do baroreceptors do?
Respond to stretch of artery due to change in BP, increase stretch = fire more APs
5 of 16
Effect of posture on BP
Redistribution ~500ml of blood from intrathoracic vessels to veins of lower limbs - gravity
6 of 16
When you stand up.....
venous pooling, causes VR to DECREASE, CO to DECREASE and BP to DECREASE this activates baroreceptors
7 of 16
What is the response to standing up?
Reflex tachycardia, +ve inotropic effects, vasoconstriction - increase TPR
8 of 16
What is postural hypotension?
When a decrease in BP of 20 mmHg after 1 minute - lead to syncope
9 of 16
Whittier the long term blood volume regulators?
1) Atrial pressure receptors - ANP 2) Renal responses - fluid excretion
10 of 16
What does atrial natriuretic peptide do?
Promotes Na+ and water excretion
11 of 16
What does renin-angiotensin do?
Stimulates aldosterone release and decreased Na+ excretion
12 of 16
Nam 4 cortico-hypothalamic influences
1) Fight/flight 2) Diving 3) Thermo-regulatory 4) Sexual
13 of 16
Explain the response of BP to stress (symp.)
Increase sympathetic cholinergic - skeletal muscle. Smooth muscle relaxes and decrease TPR
14 of 16
Explain the response of BP to stress (parasymp.)
Increase in parasympathetic output - heart. Decrease HR.
15 of 16
Response of BP to stress (both symp and para)
Rapid decrease in BP - reduced flow to brain - loss of consciousness (vasovagal syncope)
