Diffraction
The spreading out of a wave after it passes through an aperture/around an obstacle of similar size to it's wavelength. Diffraction is greatest when the gap is smaller/wave is longer.
1 of 7
Brittle
The material breaks with little or no plastic deformation
2 of 7
Limit of proportionality
The material follows Hooke's law and extends proportional to the force up until this point.
3 of 7
Tensile strength (UTS)
The maximum stress a material can undertake before it breaks
4 of 7
Compressive strain
A negative change in length divided by original length (the change in length divided by the original length when a material is compressed/squashed)
5 of 7
Tensile strain
A positive change in length divided by original length (the change in length divided by the original length when a material is subjected to tension/stretched)
6 of 7
Hard
Resists plastic deformation by surface indentation or scratching
