What did Marx believe about religion and ideology?
That religion is used to distort peoples perspectives in a way that favours the ruling class. Whoever controls the economic production controls the flow of information.

How did Lenin describe religion?
As the ‘spiritual gin’ of the people in that it distorts their believes so they do not understand that they are being oppressed. In turn stopping them from creating change.

In the 16th century it was believed that a king was ordained by God, and therefore to disobey would be both illegal and a sin.

What is alienation?
Alienation is the problem of becoming distant from something, particularly the norms and values of society. Workers are alienated as they do not earn what they make.

What did Marx mean by the ‘opium of the people’?
He believed that religion served to numb the pain of the people, by legitimising their suffering and giving them means of condolences.

Explain the Hindu Caste system?
You are born to an ascribed status, you can never leave this caste while living and cannot marry between castes. It is justified by saying that once you are reincarnated you will be better off.

Evaluate Marxist ideas.
Marx acknowledges that religion does have negative functions unlike functionalist theories, however the traditional Marxist ideas ignore positive functions.

Many of the ideas presented make sense when looking at the historical period but through history these situations have changed significantly.
