Section 1 - Part 1
George and Lennie camp in the brush by a pool along the Salinas River. Lennie is found stroking a dead mouse. George gets angry and talks about how much better his life would be if he didn't have to look after Lennie.

Section 1 - Part 2
We learn what Lennie did in Weed, and how that lead to their current predicament. They then go on to discuss the dream for the first time, and we understand that they are dependent on each other.

Section 2 - Part 1
George and Lennie arrive at Taylor Ranch in the morning and are shown around by Candy. They meet the boss, and then his son, Curley. George has a bad feeling about Curley and warns Lennie to stay away.

Section 2 - Part 2
They meet Curley's Wife - a pretty, flirtatious, misunderstood woman and some other workers on the ranch, Slim and Carlson.

Section 3 - Part 1
George tells Slim about why he and Lennie travel together, and explains what happened in Weed. The men all agree that Candy's old dog needs to be shot, and Carlson leads it off outside to kill it in an act of kindness.

Section 3 - Part 2
George and Lennie tell Candy about the dream, and Candy reveals that he has a bit of money, making the dream more likely to happen, quicker. Curley starts a fight with Lennie until George shouts for Lennie to stop Curley, injuring Curley's hand.

Section 4 - Part 1
Lennie joins Crooks in his room. Lennie talks about land and the dream. Crooks believes that George and Lennie won't get their ranch, as Crooks has seen many men try, and fail. Candy then arrives and persuades Crooks to join in the dream.

Section 4 - Part 2
Curley's Wife comes in, insults the men, threatens Crooks and starts an argument. Crooks realizes that he can never really be part of the dream.

Section 5 - Part 1
Lennie accidentally kills the puppy that Slim had given him. Curley's Wife finds him and starts talking about her dreams and feelings. She lets Lennie stroke her hair,which he does too hard. He covers her mouth & nose, shakes her and snaps her neck.

Section 5 - Part 2
Lennie runs away. Candy finds the body and tells George. They let the other men know. Curley wants revenge.

Section 6 - Part 1
Lennie hides in the brush by the pool, like George told him to do if he was in trouble. He imagines Aunt Clara and the rabbits he will tend on the ranch. They say that George doesn't care for Lennie, and would be happier without him.

Section 6 - Part 2
George finds Lennie, they revisit the dream. During this recount, George shoots Lennie. When the men find George, they assume he shot in self defence. Only Slim understands why he did what he did.
