This shows that friendship is such an abnormality that even Lennie and George who are the closest to a real friendship can not even be equal. The great depression has altered the way people act around each other. This also shows that George is boss.

George is more a role model or parent than a friend. This could prove that in fact there were no real friendships in the novel.

This is direct contrast to there particular time period they are in. The great depression made everyone all for themselves and no one looked our for each other but this is different for these two.

The fact that they are in a friendship and is going to the loniest place in the world is almost fore shadowing future events. This shows the inevitability of them splitting up.

Their relationship might not of started very positive as they had to egt used to each other. But this also proves that you need a friend as it imply s they were forced together and this is contrasting.
