Social Learning Theory

Argues that the communication is a learned behaviour rather than a natural, instinctive one.

Reward and praise make us repeat the behaviour.

Cultural variation

NV communication depends on upbringing depends on upbringing and this will be different depending on your culture. If NVC is instinctive you would not expect to see cultural differences. Cultural differences are a result of the key concept.

Criticism 1

Struggles to explain why behaviour which is punished still exist e.g frowning. Suggest that people can learn new ways of communicating but effort to teach offenders more appropriate body language have not worked well.

Criticism 2

Does not explain why to children brought up in the same environment may have different ways of NVC. There are gesture and expressions which appear to be universal, like smiling crying etc

An Alternative Theory- Evolutionary theory

It argues that humans being are governed by instinct. Over time we have evolved to pass on behaviors that help us survive and reproduce. Important in prehistoric times when man had not yet developed the capacity to communicate with words.
