Nomenclature Rules

?
Rule 1 of nomenclature
The name of the compound is based on its parent alkane (Longest carbon chain)
1 of 8
Rule 2 of nomenclature
The branch or side chain is an alkyl group. Alkyl groups have the general formula of CnH2n+1
2 of 8
Rule 3 of nomenclature
The position of the branch must be given. Number the carbon atoms in the longest chain in either direction. Choose the direction which gives the branch group the lowest number possible. The number goes in front of the name.
3 of 8
Rule 4 of nomenclature
The functional group, and hence the homologous series to which a compound belongs is usually indicated by the suffix and of occasionally the prefix of the name.
4 of 8
Rule 4 part 2 of nomenclature
A molecule can have more than one functional group. The principal functional group, which determines its name, depends on an order of priority established in IUPAC. The group with highest priority is given the suffix, the other functional groups then are

Rule 5 of nomenclature
If there are 2 or more of the same functional group, use a multiplier (e.g di-, tri-, etc). The multiplier is written between the position and the group. Commas are used between position numbers. Hyphens are used between numbers and groups.
6 of 8
Rule 6 of nomenclature
If more than one group is present, list them alphabetically, but only if the groups are named as PREFIXES.
7 of 8
Rule 7 of nomenclature
Cyclic alkanes are named from the corresponding straight-chained alkane by adding cyclo (e.g clycohexane).
