Jouvet
Deprived cats by dunking them in water, the animals eventually died but this may have been a result of the exhaustion phase of Seyle's GAS response to stressors rather than illustrating the metabolic necessity of REM
1 of 9
Industrial accidents at Chenobyl, Bhopal and Three-Mile Island
All occurred between 1am and 4am, along with most lorry accents which occur between 4am and 7am, these are both shifts that are worked by people who have disrupted sleep patterns
2 of 9
Akerstedt (1985)
Showed that people on shift work sleep 1-4 hours less than when they could sleep normally at night. They showed a particular deficit in REM sleep, which is a characteristic of later sleep cycle and therefore REM sleep has a particular function
3 of 9
Burch (2005)
Showed that disruption of the circadian rhythm disturbed melatonin levels and that there was a long term association with chronic health problems such as CHD.
4 of 9
Dawson and Campbell
Found that light acts as a zeitgeber in maintaining the rhythm of the SCN.
5 of 9
Monk and Falkard
Proposed that rapid rotation should be used to reduce the stress of repeatedly adapting to new cycles as the changes occur faster than the body can respond, this allowed individuals to maintain a constant circadian rhythm
6 of 9
Meddis
Proposed an ecological approach that animals sleep when it is unsafe to be foraging, keeps them safe and out of harms way
7 of 9
Oswald
Says that SWS is for body restoration as growth hormone is released during this period, Rem sleep is for brain restoration as oxygen consumption is greatest during this stage as the brain makes new NT and synapses.
8 of 9
Horne
Says that sleep is only for the brain as the body restores itself when we are just resting
