The ultradian rhythm of sleep

?
How many cycles of sleep are there usually each night?
there are usually 5 cycles of sleep each night
1 of 24
how long does each cycle normally last for?
each cycle lasts for around 90 minutes.
2 of 24
What does the first cycle of sleep consist of?
it begins at awake then it goes 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 and then 3 - 2 - REM (stage 5)
3 of 24
What does the second cycle of sleep consist of?
it begins with stage 2 - 3 - 4 then 3 - 2- REM
4 of 24
What does the third cycle of sleep consist of?
it begins with 2 - 3 then 2 -REM
5 of 24
What does the fourth cycle of sleep consist of?
it begins with 2 then REM
6 of 24
What does the fitth cycle of sleep consist of?
it begins with 2 - REM and then awake
7 of 24
When does stage 1 occur?
stage 1 sleep only occurs in the first cycle of sleep
8 of 24
What happens to REM throughout the night?
the periods of REM sleep get progressively longer throughout the night/cycles.
9 of 24
What is a relevant IDA point for this explanation?
it is biologically determinist
10 of 24
why is it biologically determinist? (IDA)
because it states that there is no cognition involved when determining our sleeping pattern and the content of our sleep is not under our control.
11 of 24
what external factors could affect our sleep cycle? (IDA)
alcohol and beta blockers
12 of 24
Name two pieces of research
Dement and Wehr
13 of 24
What did the research by Dement allow psychologists to do?
this research allowed psychologists to distinguish the stages of sleep and to identify the cycles of sleep
14 of 24
What two things did Dement find?
there are individual differences regarding the content of sleep, this varies within the same person over time and from person to person.
15 of 24
What does the research by Dement show?
that the ultradian rhythm of sleep does naturally vary, not everyone will follow the same pattern of cycles.
16 of 24
Give an example of an individual difference
very old people do not experience stage 4 sleep.
17 of 24
What did the research by Wehr find?
when plunging the ppts into 14 hours of darkness each day they found that during the 4 th week the ppts were settles into a regular sleep pattern, they slept for 3-5 hours then woke for 2 hours and slept again for 3-5 hours.
18 of 24
if sleep occurs in two 3 - 5 hour segments per night how would this affect the cycles of the ultradian rhythm?
in a 3 hour sleep you would get 2 cycles and in a 5 hour sleep around 3 cycles, it is possible that the second set of cycles could revert to cycle 1 and 2 again ultimately changing the content of the cycle/sleep.
19 of 24
What is good about the research conducted? (AO3)
it is objective and replicable
20 of 24
What is unlikely to occure during these pieces of research? (AO3)
demand characteristics and experimentor bias due to the biological measure used.
21 of 24
as well as biological determinism what other type is present in this explanation? (wider evaluation)
cultural determinism
22 of 24
why is cultural determinism present? (wider evaluation)
because in our society having a gap in our sleeping pattern in the middle of night does not make sense and would be a waste of time.
23 of 24
what would be a practical application of the research conducted? (wider evaluation)
it could act as a basis for recommending how long people should sleep for.
