Polyphonic
More than one tune being played at once. It sounds complex.

Melody and chords. Lines of music move at the same time-ish.

Monophonic
No harmony-just one line of tune.

Heterophonic
All instruments play the same tune.

Imitation
Repeating a phrase with slight changes.

Canon
Each part plays the same melody, they come in separately at regular intervals. The parts overlap.

Perfect Cadence
Music feels complete. From Chord V to Chord I.

Plagal Cadence
'Amen' cadence - From Chord IV to Chord I.

Imperfect Cadence
Doesn't feel like an ending. From Chord I, II or IV to V.

Interrupted Cadence
Usually from Chord V to Chord VI.

Polyrhythms
Two or more rhythms are played at the same time. Lots of African music is polyrhythmic.

Cross-rhythms
Two or more rhythms that don't fit together are played at the same time.
