What cell makes antibodies?
White Blood Cell (Lymphocytes)
1 of 13
What are Lymphocytes combined with?
Tumour cells
2 of 13
Why are Lymphocytes combined with Tumour cells?
So that they can divide.
3 of 13
What animal is usually used for the production of antibodies?
Mice, Rats, Rabbits (Because they breed quickly)
4 of 13
What is the name of a cell that is a combination of a Tumour cell and a Lymphocyte?
Hybridoma
5 of 13
What are antigens?
They are protein molecules on a surface of cells and pathogens
6 of 13
How do antigens help fight a pathogen?
They bind with their antigens and clump the pathogens together so they can all be engulfed at once.
7 of 13
What is the one flaw of antibodies?
Once a Lymphocyte starts producing one type of antibodies, it cannot produce another one or divide.
8 of 13
Why can't antibodies bond with all antigens?
Antibodies have a certain shape to match the shape of an antigen. That is why one type of antibodies can only bond to a small amount or just one antigen.
9 of 13
What are the things that monoclonal antibodies are used for?
Pregnancy tests, Diagnosis of disease, Measuring and monitoring, Treating a disease
10 of 13
How do pregnancy tests work?
Monoclonal antibodies bind to the hormone- Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) which is released in urine in the early stages of pregnancy
11 of 13
How can monoclonal antibodies be used to diagnose a disease?
Monoclonal antibodies bind to specific antigens found on pathogens, or on blood clots of cancer cells. Monoclonal antibodies can also carry markers that make it easier of the doctors to see where they have built up.
12 of 13
How can monoclonal antibodies be used to monitor and measure?
Monoclonal antibodies are used to measure hormone levels and chemicals. For example, screening blood for HIV after donation, detecting drugs that have been illegally used by athletes
