What is a metallic bond?
The electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and delocalised electrons.
1 of 8
What is a giant structure?
A type of structure in which there is a regular repeating pattern of atoms or ions held together by strong chemical bonds.
2 of 8
What is an ionic bond?
The electrostatic between oppositely charged ions.
3 of 8
What is a covalent bond?
The sharing of a pair of electrons between two atoms.
4 of 8
Why does the strength of metallic bonding increase from Na to Al?
1)Charge of cations increases.2)The number of delocalised electrons per ion increases.3)So attraction between the cations and electrons increases.4)More heat energy to break the bonds.
5 of 8
What is the melting point of metals like, why?
High melting point as lots of energy is needed to overcome electrostatic between cations and delocalised electrons.
6 of 8
What is the conductivity of metals like, why?
High electrical conductivity due to delocalised electrons.
7 of 8
What is the solubility of metals like, why?
Low solubility, the metallic bonding is stronger than the attraction of the polar water molecules for the metal ions.
