What is electronegativity?
The ability for atoms to attract the bonding pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
1 of 16
What is an element?
A substance that contains only one type of atom.`
2 of 16
What is an ionic bond?
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
3 of 16
What is an oxidation number?
A number assigned to atoms that shows the number of electrons it loses or gains to bond to other atoms.
4 of 16
What is peroxide?
A compound containing an O-O single bond or the peroxide anion (O2)-.
5 of 16
What is redox?
A reaction in which oxidation and reduction occurs.
6 of 16
What is a disproportionation reaction?
A reaction in which the same atom is both oxidised and reduced.
7 of 16
What is a hydride?
Compounds that contain the H- ions are also called hydrides.
8 of 16
What is a reducing agent?
A reagent which reduces another species (gets oxidised itself).
9 of 16
What is an oxidising agent?
A reagent which oxidises another species (gets reduced itself).
10 of 16
What is oxidation?
Process in which a species increases in oxidation number OR gains oxygen OR loses hydrogen.
11 of 16
What is reduction?
Process in which a species decreases in oxidation number OR loses oxygen OR gains hydrogen.

What are four rules for assigning oxidation number (O.s)?
1)the o.s of atoms in all elements is 0.2)The o.s of a simple ion is always equal to ions charge.3)Sum of all o.s. for atoms in a compound must be 0.4)Sum of o.s for each atom in a molecular ion must equal charge of ion.
13 of 16
What are three other things that are helpful for assigning oxidation number?
1)O.s of bonded group 1 and 2 metals are usually +1 and +2.2)O.s of hydrogen normally +1 but hydrides are -1.3)O.s of oxygen normally -2 but in peroxide is -1.
14 of 16
What would happen to the oxidation number if an atom lost electrons?
It would increase.
15 of 16
What would happen to the oxidation number if an atom gained electrons?
Oxidation number will decrease.
