Define: Post-production
The phase that follows the actual filming phase. Cutting show together, adding special effects, sound effects ect.

Define: Screen time
How much time a character has on screen as the focus of interest

Define: Shot/ reverse shot
Most conventional way of filming a conversation

Define: Master shot
Filming of the scene often from a longer distance so that the whole scene and everyone in it can be clearly seen

Define: Cut away
In editing, you can cut between the master shot and these other shots, the cut aways

Define: Action/Reaction
We see a dramatic action and follow with shots of characters reaction

Define: Reaction/Action
We see e.g. shocked reactions and then cut to the actual action causing this

Define: Cross cutting
This is where there are two scenes taking place and the editing cuts backwards and forwards between them

Define: Ellipsis
Condensing of time during a scene. Actions are cut out which the audience can easily guess at

Define: Long take
Shots that last longer than average - often tracking shots following a particular actor

Define: Short take
A brief shot quickly cutting to another shot

A group of shots which we are designed to give us an impression as a whole

Define: Dynamic Editing
Frequent cross-cutting and often very short takes so that the understanding of the audience is impressionistic rather than narrative

Define: Continuity editing
Most common editing style- aims to preserve narrative flow and create a coherent sequence which does not disrupt time and space

Define: Cut
The most basic way of moving from one shot to another

Define: Match on Action
This is where an action is filmed from two or more different angles which are then cut together to create one smooth acition

Define: Match on Dialogue
Where something said in one scene has significance in the shot that follow

Define: Eyeline match
Shot of a character looking in a certain direction. Often the next shot shows uswhat the character is looking at

Define: Transparent editing/filming
An editing style which aims at making the viewer as unaware as possible of camera/editor

Define: Non-transparent editing
An editing style which aims to keep the viewer aware that they are watching a media product not reality

Define: Transition
Added in post to move from one shot to the next

Define: Wipe/slide
A transition whee one screen slides across another or pushes it out of the way

Define: Dissolve
A transition where one scene dissolves into the next

Define: Fade to black
A transition where the picture of the screen fades away until you are left with a black screen

Define: Graphic Match
A clear visual link between two scenes that follow each other.

Two or more seperate screens shown together

Define: Slow motion
Also knows as time stretch. Slowing down an action

Deliberately putting contrasting scenes together
