MOTION
when an object moves it position over time
Rotary motion - moves in a circular path
Linear motion - movement in a straight line
Oscillating motion - movement back and forth in a circular path
Reciprocating motion - movement back and forth in a straight line
1 of 8
SPEED/DISTANCE/TIME FORMULAS
Rotational motion
speed = number of revolutions
time taken
Linear motion
speed = distance travelled
time taken
Oscillating motion
Frequency = number of oscillations
time taken
2 of 8
LEVERS
A lever is a rigid bar that pivots on a fulcrum.
Force is called the effort
The output force is the load
3 of 8
LINKAGES

Directs forces and movement to where they are needed
A simple pulley - changes the direction of motion of a cord
A reverse motion linkage - will reverse the direction of an input
A bell crank - goes around a corner
A peg and slot - converts rotary into oscillating motion
A crank and slider converts rotary
4 of 8
CAMS

A component used with a follower to convert rotary motion to reciprocating motion
Used in toys, engines and machinery
a snail cam - steadily rises then suddenly drops
a pear shaped cam - a sudden rise and fall followed by a long period where the follower dose not move
a eccentric cam - creates an even rise and fall throughout its rotation
5 of 8
GEARS

gear systems transfer rotary motion
used in clocks
a simple gear consists of two wheels which interlock
the input gear is called the driver gear
the output gear is called driven gear
SPEED = number of teeth on on driven gear
number of teeth on driver gear
6 of 8
BELT DRIVES

used in washing machines
Like a gear system but has a belt around the edge
the smaller pulley rotates faster than the larger pulley
7 of 8
RACK AND PINION

Used in sliding doors
Converts rotary motion into linear motion
