'Maximal' means the athlete is working at maximum effort, or tested to exhaustion

Disadvantages of maximal testing
Difficulty ensuring the performer is exerting maximum effort. Potential over exertion/injury. Dependant on athlete's arousal levels.

This means the athlete is working below maximal effort

They depend on extrapolation being made to unknown maximum.
