What are some differences between alkanes and alkenes?
Alkanes are saturated (they have a single covalent bond) whilst alkenes are unsaturated (they have a double covalent bond). For alkanes: 2n+2 and for alkenes: 2n
1 of 5
What conditions are needed for addition polymerisation?
You need high amounts of pressure and a catalyst.
2 of 5
Why does an alkene react with bromine water, unlike an alkane?
Due to their weak double bond, an alkene can decolourise the bromine water and form a dibromo compound.
3 of 5
What occurs during polymerisation?
Many monomers join together to become a polymer chain.
4 of 5
What is the monomer in the reaction: ethene → poly(ethene)?
Ethene is - note how the polymer is lots of ethene monomers.
