6 reasons why goal setting is important?
Motivates the performer, enables performer to be more organised, allows planning, builds self confidence and increase training effectiveness, helps reduce anxiety and increase arousal and structured pathway for development.

2 reasons why it may not be successful?
Too many goals may demotivate the athlete, can only be done over a long period of time so if there is an event soon then it isn't effective.

What is motivation?
The internal mechanisms and external stimuli that arouse and direct behaviour.

What is intrinsic motivation?
Want to succeed for personal gain.

What is extrinsic motivation?
Want to succeed for reward.

What is achievement motivation?
A fundamental drive to succeed or persist with a task.

Nach = Need to achieve, Naf = Need to avoid failure.

An approach that attempts to categorise the reasons we give for winning and losing.

Internal, external, stable and unstable.

What is learned helplessness?
When an athlete perceives defeat as inevitable.

Helping athletes to avoid failure by focusing on positive attributions and the removal of any negative feelings.

What is performance profiling?
Constructing an individual development programme to help improve the athletes performance overall. Identifies areas that need developing and sets objectives.

Takes time, requires sports specific knowledge, failure to follow up and reassess programme.

Holding camps, ensuring all members of the group have importance and rewarding all players equally with praise or criticism.
