Equality
Ensure a person is treated fairly and given the same opportunities despite of differences. Must not be discriminated due to these differences.

Equality doesn't mean treating people the same, but the outcome should be the same.

Diversity
Recognising and respecting individual differences. Valuing diversity is accepting that everyone is unique. Factors of diversity include: race, religion, age, gender etc.

Legal requirement to respect this.

Choice
Gives individuals control over their lives. Enabling them to make their own decisions. Increases their self esteem.

Confidentiality
Information should be shared on a need to know basis. Should only be shared with those who are involved in the patient's care.

Consultation
Individuals should be asked their opinion and views about the type of care and activities, take their opinion into account where possible.

Protection from abuse and harm
safeguarding must be followed at all times. Health and safety legislation should be adhered to. Risk assessments must be carried out and policies and procedures followed.

Equal and fair treatment
Individuals should be treated in accordance with the law and their needs and their needs. Everyone should be given the same opportunities.

Equality Act 2010- try to avoid stereotypes and prejudice.

Right to life
An individual's life is protected by the law. No one is allowed to harm you and equally you cannot harm anyone else. Everyone's life should be valued and protected.

SEAP - support, empower, advocate, promote. Charity that provides free, independent advocacy services. Helps resolve issues about health and wellbeing, ensure they're in control.

Different people need different support groups, different groups for mental health conditions, learning disability, older people, parent of children with disabilities

Help empower - take control of their lives

Give comfort, advice, encouragement

Examples of Support groups
Mind - provides advice and support to empower people for those experiencing mental health problems. Campaigns to improve services and raise awareness.
Age UK - raises awareness of problems faced by older people. Asks to reform areas of care systems.

Care given by those not paid or professionally trained. Friends, family and neighbours - helping with daily tasks.
