What are the two theories on Limits of Attention?
Coherence and Scene
1 of 9
What is stage 1 of the coherence theory?
This is where representations are all done at the same time meaning they have no attention paid to it, therefore they have a lack of stability and are replaced by stimuli in their locations.
2 of 9
What is stage 2 of the coherence theory?
Where focusing on an object provides a more detailed and laster longing representation of it. Therefore, if there is an interruption, the representation of the object will remain.
3 of 9
What is the scene theory?
Where detailed representations are formed of objects that are the focus of attention. These representations are incorporated into a mental map showing the spacial layout of the scene.
4 of 9
How is the information stored in the scene theory?
Into long term memory
5 of 9
What is stage 3 of the coherence theory?
Where attention is removed from the object, it's representations disintegrate and returns to its prior state.
6 of 9
What is a difference between the theories?
Coherence theory assumes that to detect the change attention is needed to be on the specific object at the time of the change, whereas the scene theory assumes that because the object is stored into long term memory, the change will be noticed anyway
7 of 9
What does the coherence theory assume?
That to detect the change of the object, the attention must be on the object at the time of the change
8 of 9
What does the scene theory assume?
That because it is stored into long term memory, the change will be detected even if attention isn't on the object at the time of change.
