Americans hated Mormons
They had to move away from the white Americans and find somewhere else to live.

Find a newland to build the 'Holy City'
They moved to Salt Lake to build their city because nobody else was there and it was away from everyone else. There was no fresh water so the White Americans did not go near it. They went West.

They could trade with them for a safe passage.

They had to bring enough food for everyone but they could also hunt. They tried to use the Winter Quarters but it didn't work.

The wagons roads after a while and stone piles were placed to create a pathway every hundred metres which were painted so that the mormons could recognise the path. At night the wagons formed a circle around the people whilst they slept.

16,000 mormons to cross the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains
They were divided into groups of 100 and then each 100 was divided into 50's and then 10's. Each group of 10 had a captain who was in charge of 10 families. They set up the Winter Quarters.

How did people travel?
People travelled in columns and then their wagons were put in circles around them at night for protection.
